Bake Your Thesis

On the 22nd of February, the inaugural Bake Your Thesis competition took place within the School of Mathematics and the School of Computer Science. This competition provided the opportunity for PhD students to present their work to postgraduates and members of staff within the schools in the form of a baked good. There were four judges, two for each of the schools - Dr Katerina Kaouri, Dr Ian Charlesworth, Dr Catherine Teehan and Dr Kirill Sidorov. Bakes were entered by the following PhD Students:

• Braided Sweet Bread – Tasarla Deadman
• Generative Cupcakes – Thomas Poudevigne-Durance
• Shamali – Vasilis Ieropoulos
• The story of Taylor-Couette problem with the dates cake – Ahlam Alghamdi
• A Comparison of Deterministic and Stochastic Local Search Metaheuristics and their Applications to Combinatorial Emulsification – Aric Fowler
• Step one: Separate the eggs – Timothy Ostler
• Cake your PDE solution – Layla Sadeghi Namaghi
• Optimizing NHS Bed and Staff Allocation for Elderly and Frail Patient Care: A Comprehensive Planning Approach – Elizabeth Williams
• Twisted Vitamin K-Theory Doughnuts and Snake Lemma Pickle Pie – Sam Richardson
• Damson jam sponge – Matt Hutchings
• Operation-al Research! – Matthew Howells
• Coin of Bitcoin – Gabriela Filipkowska

The quality of the bakes were outstanding, and the judges found it extremely difficult to pick two winners! The winners were:

• Star Baker and Audience Favourite - Layla Sadeghi Namaghi
• Runner up - Elizabeth Williams
• Audience Runner up - Ahlam Alghamdi
• Honourable mentions - Matthew Howells and Timothy Ostler
